After over 21 years working with Exotic and rising to lead photographer (and even sole photographer for a few years), Doug (HYPNOX to many), will be retiring and moving out of state by year's end to start a new chapter in his life.
Doug has given his heart and soul to both this magazine and the industry as a whole. He’s an absolute workhorse, with immense artistic creativity and one of the most experienced and masterful eyes we’ve ever had behind the lens. He quite literally shaped the creative direction of this magazine over the past two decades, making Exotic something special to pick up and peruse.
He first started working with Exotic back in the summer of 2004, when we premiered our unique Seattle edition: Exotic Underground—a magazine that covered Seattle’s entire nightlife and entertainment sector, not just the adult industry. Unfortunately, the Great Recession took its toll on this very niche, young magazine, and it would be laid to rest by the end of 2008.
Noticing the superstar photographer we had found during this short, four-year run, we quickly offered him a job at our Portland publication—the same one you hold in your hands this very moment. The rest, as they say, is history. HYPNOX is well known throughout our industry, and there’s not a single copy of Exotic you can pick up from the last 18 years that isn't filled with his photography.
He will be genuinely missed by all of us here at Exotic, as well as many people across our industry. We've included some thoughts, memories, and wishes from our staff, friends, and various industry business owners below.
Bryan (Exotic): Doug, I still remember the first time we met. It was at Safari Showclub, at an Exotic anniversary party. I remember being introduced to you and immediately noticing your massive platform tennis shoes and thinking, "Who the fuck is this guy?”
Little did I know that this guy would literally reshape Exotic over the next two decades—quite simply, he "leveled up" the overall appearance of the magazine, and gave creative input on a lot more than just photography.
I also never expected that this guy would become a close friend; someone I could bounce ideas off of, discuss health concerns with, and go to Trail Blazers games with. You're easy to talk to, non-judgmental, and a faithful and loyal friend. Lucky for me, that friendship lives on, even after you move on from Exotic.
Thank you for everything, Doug! G.P.O.A.T!
Adam (Exotic): Thanks for being an integral part in keeping this party going for the last 20 years! I genuinely hope that whatever comes next for you provides even a sliver of the excitement that comes with getting to photograph the Northwest’s most gorgeous and incredibly talented entertainers, month in and month out! Oh, the stories you’ll have to share with someone, as unbelievable as they may seem! Appreciate your professionalism! Wishing you health and happiness…especially when it comes time to reflect on all the beauty and amazement you’ve seen from behind that lens!
Shawna (Exotic): Can’t believe you’re throwing in the [platform] boots! You will surely be missed. Wishing you all the best for whatever comes next—may your future be perfectly lit, in focus, and full of stunning shots.
Jason DeSomer (Whatever.Photo & Exotic): For over two decades, Doug—or as most people know him, HYPNOX—has been one of the defining eyes of Portland. He didn’t just take photos; he documented an entire culture, one frame at a time. Thousands of dancers, endless nights, and twenty-plus years of turning moments into something permanent. His work became part of the city’s cultural DNA.
His photography for Exotic helped shape how this city sees itself—unapologetic, alive, and unfiltered. He set the standard not just for the craft, but for commitment. You can’t talk about Portland’s nightlife without seeing it through his lens. Doug’s reputation is legendary for a reason, and the imprint he leaves behind will keep shaping Portland long after this issue hits the stands.
It’s been an honor to learn from him, and I’ll do everything I can to make sure the hard work, vision, and grit he’s put into this continue to matter. Portland’s nightlife has a face because he gave it one.
Likeia (Exotic): Doug, you’re an uncle figure to me, and I'm sad to see you leave, although I’m excited for you to move into your next life chapter. I'll always remember and be grateful for all our concert memories, and the many musicians and bands you’ve shown me. Not one cool record release sneaks past you! Thank you for all of your kindness and silliness. No matter what kind of day you’ve had, you always save smiles and jokes for me. Wishing you good health and the very best journey. <3
Dick Hennessy: From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the 17-plus years of friendship, the camaraderie, and all the good times. Your photography is unmatched, and your guidance set the tone for much of my success in the industry. Wishing you all the best on your next chapter, and thanks again for saving my life.
Mason (Desire): Doug, you will truly be missed. You’re one of the most talented & loyal people in the Northwest strip club industry…I eagerly await Bodyscape's release in 2045!
Scott & Julie (Guilty Pleasures): Congratulations on your new life chapter! We are going to miss you!
