A Reasonable Suggestion: For Preventing the Musicians of Portland From Being A Burden To Their City, and For Making Them Beneficial To The Publick

A Reasonable Suggestion: For Preventing the Musicians of Portland From Being A Burden To Their City, and For Making Them Beneficial To The Publick

It is a melancholy object to those who walk through our great downtown or travel in our inner suburbs. When they see the streets, the roads, and the trendy hipster bars crowded with narcissistic singers of the male sex, followed by three, four, or six musicians, all in tragically hip clothing and soliciting every pedestrian to come and see their mid-week performance at 11 p.m. These singers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time gigging, to beg for sustenance for their talentless backing band, who, as they come into their own, either turn singer-songwriters themselves (for want of attention), or leave their dear native city to try to make it in Seattle, or sell themselves to Los Angeles.

I think it is agreed, by all parties, that this prodigious number of musicians clogging up our bars, cafes, basements, mothers’ spare rooms, community colleges, and service industry jobs has become not just a detriment to our once proud and beautiful city, but to these poor musicians themselves. Literally climbing over themselves, brother pitted against brother, just for the "prestigious" honor of opening for Portugal. The Man at the Doug Fir Lounge...

Ding-Dong: The Weird World of Animal Genitalia

Ding-Dong: The Weird World of Animal Genitalia

Mother nature is, at her heart, a hardcore surrealist. Look at anglerfish, peacocks, Steven Tyler... The natural world is filled with mysteries we may never fully understand, no matter how hard we try. And we do try! Science loves a mystery—especially a sexy one. With this in mind, let’s take a brief tour of the reproductive habits and equipment that are part of the spectrum of life on Earth and do our best not to point and laugh...

The Monthly Column: Creepy Places of the World

The Monthly Column: Creepy Places of the World

We, as humans (which I expect most of the reading audience to be, except for you, Sasquatch Steve), often develop fears of locations. Perhaps it is due to their air, their look, or the fact that they’re covered in blood. There’s always been the path in the woods, which the natives shun. There are places that, quite frankly, give us "the willies." That insensible dread, a sense we cannot escape. It could be a drafty cathedral from the middle ages or just your mom’s linen closet. We can’t explain precisely why we feel unnerved, but when enough of us so do, we take note.

We have records of people being afraid of specific locations for the entirety of our history. So, we’re gonna go through some spooky shit, and look at places on Earth (Urf) where most average humans do not want to go.

How to Move (The Procrastinator’s Edition)

How to Move (The Procrastinator’s Edition)

So, it’s time to move. Change is in the air, and possibly less expensive rent, or mortgage, if you own. But, let’s be honest here, nothing is getting cheaper, and you probably don’t own anything of value, let alone a piece of real estate. If you do, good on you. Stay put, and don’t be a sell-out to the menaces of society, who already own three condos and one home and want to flip your hard-earned piece of land and manufactured home so that we can put another self-storage space in; which so graciously allows you to put all the things you can’t fit into the studio you "upgraded to," into an 8x10 heated box with a lock on it.

Yes, it is time to move. For me personally, it is one of the most draining experiences I could ever experience. It takes too long, there are too many steps to finish a process, and you’re supposed to also be organizing what’s in your boxes? Along with labeling what room they go in? And putting bubble wrap around stuff? That’s for the birds...
